In February of 2006, I attended the Leading Women conference in Calgary. Longing to be in Ottawa with our new grandson, I wondered why I’d come to the opposite part of the nation.

For some time, I’d had the urge to write a book. During that weekend the feelings increased.

At the end of the conference, everyone quickly gathered their belongings and headed out of the meeting room. As Wendy Nelles came down the hall, I congratulated her and N. J. Lindguist on their Leading Women Award for Excellence in Communication and Media (for founding The Word Guild). Then, in a moment of weakness, I blurted out my desire to write.

Wendy grabbed my hand and led me to a sofa.
