This spring, Wendy Nelles resigned as volunteer Co-Director of the Write! Canada conference. Wendy attended her first conference (then known as God Uses Ink) in 1988, and was asked to become part of the conference committee. In 2001, after co-founding The Word Guild, she became co-director of the conference.
Wendy gave the following speech at the 2010 Write! Canada closing plenary after she was presented with an inscribed picture of some of the conference grounds.
Wendy received an extended standing ovation from the 200+ faculty and attendees who attended Write! Canada 2010.
Wendy's speech:
This conference has been a big part of my life for 22 years. From it sprang The Word Guild, which became a huge part of my life for the last nine years.
As I was reflecting on these facts last night, I realized how much I have gained from this experience. I quickly came up with 12 ways I have benefited, and easily could have generated several dozen more!
These benefits include (1) improved writing and editing skills, and (2) greater knowledge of the writing and publishing industry. I've gained (3) self-confidence, (4) public speaking experience, and (5) leadership skills.
These last three all have blossomed from opportunities at this conference. You would never have seen me up here on stage speaking in 1988 when I first came to God Uses Ink, because—like so many of you have told me about your own lives—I was hiding my light under a bushel.
I've been greatly helped by (6) the affirmation that I've received from so many of you; a warm hug or smile, or a compliment, means more than you'll ever know.
I've added more experience in (7) project management and (8) event planning, and I've developed (9) a large network of contacts and colleagues.
I've profited from (10) the encouragement generated by meeting kindred spirits who share my passions and my faith.
This conference and organization have facilitated the creation of (11) many wonderful friendships. It's like a family reunion when we all see each other! And finally I'll mention (12) the prayer support I've received, which has meant so much, especially at times of crisis.
I have grown so much, both personally and professionally. Thank you to everyone I've worked closely with, both volunteers and staff; I so appreciate your commitment. A special thanks to everyone who has served on the leadership teams of Write! Canada and The Word Guild. And of course, particular thanks to N. J. Lindquist, Denise Rumble and Les Lindquist, who have poured so much of their heart and soul into The Word Guild and into this conference.
The vision for what God can do through all of us who are part of Write! Canada and The Word Guild is still growing. We want to do no less than to impact the Canadian culture.
I urge you to get involved. I can guarantee you it will change your life… because it changed mine!
God bless you all.
