Grace Fox is a familiar face at Write! Canada. Learn more about one of last year's keynote speakers, missionary, and author of Peaceful Moments to Begin Your Day…
At Write! Canada 2012, Grace will be conducting a workshop titled “Writing Life-Changing Devotionals.”
Tell us how you became a writer.
I believe God hard-wired me to write. Even as a child, I loved to write letters and school reports. In 1999, I attended a writers’ conference—hoping to launch a greeting card line. That idea was politely rejected; God had other plans. I listened to what the magazine editors taught in their workshops and began writing articles instead. The rest, as they say, is history.
The theme of Write! Canada 2012 is “Write with purpose and joy.” What advice would you give to writers in order to achieve this goal?
Stay in tune with God. Our sense of purpose and joy comes from knowing that He loves us regardless of how “successful” we are in the publishing industry.
You spend a lot of time speaking to groups across the country. You try to reach as many readers as you
can. As a Christian, how do you manage to be “in the world but not of the world”?
I go wherever God opens doors to minister, and I do so knowing I’m His ambassador. I stay in the Word, I hold to biblical values, and I have a prayer team behind me.
You do missionary work in Eastern Europe each year. Tell us about your experiences there.
My husband and I are national co-directors of International Messengers Canada. We recruit, train, and lead short-term missionary teams to partner with our 150 career staff in those countries.
Each summer, we take volunteers on two-week ministry trips to host English-learning evangelistic family camps. Check www.im-canada.ca for more information.
What are the most important components of a writer’s personal website?
Contact information, the ability to sign up for newsletters, free resources, and a store where readers can buy books and other products.
You are participating in a panel discussion called “Roadblocks, Detours, and Acts of God” for this year's Write! Canada Conference. What roadblocks have you encountered on your writing journey and how has God helped you overcome them?
Here’s one example: Launching our overseas ministry in 2007 drastically altered my writing schedule and aspirations. I’ve had to consistently surrender my writing dreams and remember that God is in control.
Tell us about your most recent release Peaceful Moments to Begin your Day: Devotions for Busy Women.
It’s a re-release of 10-Minute Time Outs for Busy Women. The new format is a padded gift book, perfect for tucking into a purse. Each devotional contains a spiritual aha moment from my life or from the lives of other women. Scripture-based praise prayers and intercessory prayers teach readers how to use God’s Word in prayer.
"Insight for Living Canada" is featuring the book as a recommended resource.
A Facebook Page by the same title offers readers a spiritual oasis in the midst of a busy, noisy day: https://www.facebook.com/PeacefulMomentsToBeginYourDay.
