About Write! Canada

For 26 years, the Write! Canada conference has played a crucial role in nurturing Canadian writers and editors who are Christian. The conference has provided encouragement and inspiration, developed a sense of community, fostered excellence and professionalism, and offered invaluable opportunities for networking, marketing and skills training.

Write! Canada is designed to be a warm and supportive environment in which participants from many backgrounds and Christian traditions are united in their common love of God and of writing. Whether in the classroom or in informal conversation, the focus is on subjects that foster the pursuit of excellence in writing.

The conference has impacted three generations of Canada’s Christian writers and editors, from their teens to seventies, from much-published professionals to aspiring writers. Many have notched up significant career achievements thanks to Write! Canada, ranging from getting their first article published, to meeting their literary agent, editor or publisher, getting a new job, signing a book contract or making key industry contacts.

From 1984 to 2001, Faith Today magazine and the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada organized the annual conference, then known as God Uses Ink. In 2001, The Word Guild was established and assumed responsibility for the conference, starting with the 2002 event. To mark the conference's 20th anniversary, the name was changed to Write! Canada in 2004.

The 25th annual conference was celebrated from June 18 to 20, 2009 in a special reunion event. (No conference was held in 1991, a transition year.) N. J. Lindquist and Wendy Elaine Nelles, whose impetus for co-founding The Word Guild in 2002 was to save and expand the conference, have served as co-directors from 2002 to 2010.

The Guelph Bible Conference Centre will host writers, editors, speakers, agents and publishers from across North America again in 2010. Writers, editors, speakers and Christian communicators of all types and at all stages are welcome. Write! Canada offers three days of solid instruction, stimulating interaction, exciting challenge, and worshipful community.

Whether you are a professional or a beginner, you will sharpen your skills through classes by top-notch instructors on techniques of writing personal experience books and articles, fiction, memoirs/biographies, poetry, press releases, and articles for newspapers and magazines; editing your own or others' work; developing a speaking ministry; understanding trends in publishing including ebooks, self-publishing, promotion; strategic career planning; and much more.

You will also be able to schedule 15-minute appointments with literary agents and editors from Christian magazines and publishing houses. You can benefit from the manuscript critique service, available only to Write! Canada registrants, and meet with industry professionals who will evaluate your writing and give you marketing tips.

Take advantage of networking opportunities, question and answer panels with industry professionals, open-mike reading sessions and a well-stocked bookstore.

There is lots of information on this Web site about the conference. Trying to decide whether to come? Take a look at some other pages under the Why Come drop-down menu, including Benefits, Testimonials from previous attendees, and Stories of how the conference has impacted people's lives.

Check out the What's Happening section. Under Learning Opportunities, you'll see all the details about the seven in-depth Continuing Classes (you choose one), and the 18 Workshops (you choose three). Under Who's Coming, take a look at the outstanding Faculty you'll meet.

Write! Canada is a program of The Word Guild.

If you're not a member of The Word Guild, we highly recommend that you consider joining at the same time as you register for the conference.

Members of The Word Guild get a $20 discount on the Write! Canada registration fee. This is one of the many benefits of membership. An associate membership is $59; the $20 you'll save on your conference registration effectively means one year of membership will cost you $39. That's only 75 cents a week! That's cheaper than a cup of coffee, a package of gum or a newspaper.

One of the big advantages of joining The Word Guild before attending Write! Canada is immediately becoming part of a nationwide community of writers, editors and speakers who are Christian. You'll be linked into a caring and encouraging group who will offer you advice and encouragement. You can join our Internet discussion group to ask questions and talk about writing issues. You'll receive a bi-weekly newsletter that informs you about industry news, job openings, writing markets, contests, book launches and upcoming seminars. You can ask for prayer support from our Prayer Team about your career. You'll start to get to know many of the people you'll meet at the conference. Find out more about the benefits of membership in The Word Guild here.
