One of the many things we do at Write! Canada is eat. Your registration fee includes a number of home-cooked meals: two breakfasts, two lunches, and two suppers, plus a number of coffee breaks.
We heartily dislike conferences where you come only to learn, and never connect with other people. Where, at meal time, you go to a restaurant with people you know. And if you came alone, you may very well eat alone.
Write! Canada isn't only about learning; it's also about connecting with other people who are part of the same industry–the same small industry. You can't do that sitting in rows listening to instructors. So we look for opportunities to allow you to mingle and make new friends.
The truth is, many of us have made life-long friends at this conference. Not just writing friends. Best friends.
Some of us have received assignments from editors because of a casual conversation at breakfast.
Sure, the food is terrific. We hear that all the time. And that's great. But our meals are about a lot more than the food. They're about being family. And families eat their meals together.
Some thngs you need to know:
Our meal times are all listed in the schedule. We encourage people to stay on-site if possible, but if you do stay off-site, you are still encouraged to come in time for breakfast since it's paid for in your registration fee. Please let the registrar know if you will be missing any meals.
New: This year we have a vegetarian option. Please indicate on the registration form if you want vegetarian meals. We need to know the numbers for each meal.
Those with lactose and other intolerances, or those on special diets, may want to bring some extra food to supplement the meals supplied. There is limited storage space in a refrigerator in the lounge (which is mainly filled with bottled water for faculty). You can also store medicines in this refrigerator. Be sure to clearly label everything with your name on each item.
Nuts: Please use discretion if you bring nuts onsite, and refrain from bringing any foods containing them into the public areas. If you are staying in on-site accommodation, ensure that your roommates do not have allergies before unpackaging or eating any tree nut or peanut products.
