I Volunteered

After four years with The Word Guild, I had finally decided to volunteer for the newsletter, Write! On, after seeing advertisements for Editors Wanted. I had not been an editor before that, but decided to go for it, and I received training, and a lot of advice from the managing team.

I started working with Marcy Kennedy who was also new to the role of editor; and through our emails, we formed a great working friendship, and looked forward to seeing each other at the next Write! Canada.

I had volunteered for a couple of positions at Write! Canada, including standing behind the registration table. I love to help people at the conferences, and I figured that from the registration table, I would be able to meet and greet the majority of people coming in, including Marcy.

Some time had passed, and my co-volunteer and I were chatting when Wendy Nelles approached and smiled and said; “Well, I’m glad you two finally met.”

We must have had the same dumbfounded look on our faces. Finally, my Registration partner and I decided to read the name tags hanging around the other's neck.

Marcy Kennedy and I had been looking for each other on the wrong side of the table.

There are so many great people to meet when you put yourself in a position to encounter something new.

Where will you meet your next friend? Volunteer to find out!
